Here is a quirk of nature, a target that shines not so much for its beauty, but rather for the challenge of capturing it.

Palomar 4 is a globular cluster in the Big Dipper, located about 340 000 light-years from us, it is further away than the two Magellanic clouds !

It is a very faint object of 2 arc minutes, with stars of magnitude 18 and part of the eponymous catalog.

There are 15 such very faint clusters in the Palomar catalog discovered in the 1950s. The reason these clusters were discovered late is that they are very diffuse, largely obscured by the Milky Way, and located almost in orbit of the latter.

Originally considered as a spheroidal dwarf galaxy and was given the name of Ursa Major dwarf galaxy, before we realized that it is actually a globular cluster of our galaxy.

Voici une bizarrerie de la nature, une cible qui ne brille pas tellement par sa beauté, mais plutôt pour le défi de la capturer !

Palomar 4 est un amas globulaire dans la Grande Ourse, situé à environ 340 000 années-lumière de nous, c'est à dire qu'il est plus éloigné que les deux nuages de Magellan !
C'est un objet très faible de 2 arc minutes, avec des étoiles de magnitude 18 et faisant partie du catalogue éponyme.

On compte 15 amas à très faible luminosité de ce genre, dans le catalogue Palomar, découverts dans les années 1950. La raison pour laquelle ces amas ont été découverts tardivement est qu'ils sont très diffus, largement obscurcis par la Voie Lactée, et situés quasiment en orbite de cette dernière.

Considéré à l'origine comme une galaxie naine sphéroïdale et recevant le nom de galaxie naine de la Grande Ourse, avant qu'on ne s'aperçoive qu'il s'agit en réalité d'un amas globulaire de notre galaxie.

Capturé sous la Lune au mois de Mai depuis mon jardin, ciel de ville Bortle 5.
